CROSS-FUNCTIONAL PRODUCT & SYSTEMS ENGINEERING
MECHANICAL · ELECTRONICS · SOFTWARE/AI

Metal to code.
One engineer.

BlueCrest exists for hardware projects where integration matters. Instead of splitting mechanical, electronics & software across specialists, one accountable engineer carries the full system — from physical design to the intelligence behind it.

15 years of unforgiving environments: rockets, underground & subsea rovers, oil & gas, helicopter equipment, production lines. Everything learnt there, applied to your hardest problems. No handoffs. No translation loss. No three-vendor coordination.

01 / TRACK RECORD

Proof, not promises.

A career spent honing expertise & judgement where mechanical, electronics & software converge — under pressure, underwater, and occasionally on fire.

01 / ROBOTICS

Subsea & underground robotics

Designed, built & maintained remote inspection vehicles: submersible systems, drive trains, sensor payloads, control interfaces. Co-inventor, US Patent 10,954,648.

02 / AEROSPACE

Launch vehicles

Systems integration across mechanical, avionics & propulsion for solid propellant rockets. Designed & tested rocket motors; wrote software to cut propulsion test analysis from hours to seconds.

03 / AVIATION

Helicopter equipment

Program manager & lead designer for multi-million dollar international aerospace programs — from concept through to operational testing & certification.

04 / MANUFACTURING & OPERATIONS

Smart systems

Developed fault-reporting systems linking field ops to maintenance teams for real-time alerts & analytics; brought live production dashboards to factory floors from disconnected data; deployed PDM/PLM/MES platforms & automated CAD processing tasks.

02 / PROBLEM

Hardware projects don't fail
in one discipline.
They fail between them.

The most challenging part of hardware development often isn't tech — it's coordinating teams, maintaining communication & conveying requirements or current state. Effective integration is where budgets & timelines quietly die.

FM-01 / INTERFACE

Part incompatibility

The enclosure insufficiently designed for wiring layout. Each discipline is polished on its own; the interface between them is where it breaks.

FM-02 / TIMING

Stale assumptions

Firmware written for a sensor marked for replacement. Two experts, both current in their lane, working from different versions of the truth.

FM-03 / SCOPE

The gaps nobody owns

The "simple" leftovers no one addressed. They belonged to everyone & therefore to none — so it surfaces late as a surprise.

BlueCrest reduces project risk by putting one engineer across mechanical, electronics & software, with one accountable path from concept to working system. I cover the gaps, so you don't have to.

03 / SERVICES

What I do for you.

3 core areas. Choose 1, or leverage what's needed from each.

01 / BUILD

Build.

Fixed-scope product development from a one-engineer lab: design, fabrication and testing under one roof — so your idea reaches "it works" in weeks, not quarters.

01

Feasibility & Architecture Sprint

Turn an idea or stalled project into a build plan: system architecture, risk register and costed roadmap. Act on it with me — or take it to anyone else.

Scoping
02

Working Prototype

Mechanical, electronics & software designed as 1 system — by 1 engineer who has built to aerospace standards & survived field service. You get the working unit plus every file behind it.

Concept → hardware
03

Test & Iterate

Measure, learn, refine. Instrumentation, data acquisition, structured test campaigns — so revisions are driven by evidence, not opinion.

Measure → refine
04

Production Readiness

Design for manufacture/assembly/cost, with docs to take your prototype to production. Part consolidation, tolerancing, supplier-ready drawings, aerospace-grade documentation discipline.

Prototype → manufacture
02 / LEAD

Lead.

Senior judgement, delivery discipline and hands-on capability — without the full-time payroll. Tap into project management experience leading multi-million-dollar international aerospace programs.

01

Fractional Principal Engineer

Architecture, design reviews, the make-or-break technical calls, mentoring — in your standups, not on the sidelines.

Technical advisory
02

Fractional Head of Engineering

Own the roadmap, process & quality system. Avoid compounding process debt- what's tolerable at 5 people is chaos at 25. Cheapest to fix it early.

Process + delivery
03

Founder Advisory

A senior sounding board: architecture, build-vs-buy, hiring, where tech helps vs where it's noise. I've made the mistakes so you don't have to.

General support
03 / ACCELERATE

Accelerate.

Force multipliers for the team you already have- shipped for the factory floor, not a slide deck. Practical systems from hard-won experience: what works, what breaks, and what actually gets adopted.

01

Engineering Systems

Pull engineering & production information into one source of truth. Reduce errors & inefficiency so you can focus on innovation, not admin.

Siloed → Unified
02

Live intelligence

Access & understand scattered data. Operational insights from the field; production dashboards from disconnected silos.

Floor → boardroom
03

Automation & AI

Streamline processes across documentation, testing & product lines. AI where it works, from sensors to spreadsheets.

Hours → Seconds

04 / PROCESS

Three steps. No surprises.

01

Scoping call

Bring the idea or thing that doesn't work. You'll get an honest read on feasibility — even if the answer is "don't do it." Costs nothing; you'll leave with a clearer picture either way.

02

Fixed-scope proposal

Deliverables, timeline, price — in writing. No day-rate meter running. Larger projects break into staged packages so you can review at each gate.

03

Build, with demos

Regular progress demos, full transparency. At the end you own everything — IP, CAD files, source code, documentation. All of it.

05 / CAPABILITIES

Capability matrix.

One engineer, integrating multiple disciplines. The seams between them are where the real saves are. Past experience has covered:

Engineering capabilities organised by discipline
Mechanical CAD/CAM · structural analysis (classical/FEA) · CFD · DFM/DFA · composites · fabrication (3D printing, machining, welding)
Electronics/Electrical Microcontrollers & sensor integration · embedded firmware · PCB design · power distribution (AC/DC) · comms (serial, ethernet, wireless, fibre optic umbilicals)
Software/AI Dashboards · GUIs · web apps · test & data-acquisition pipelines · automation scripting · sensor fusion · vision · AI harnesses & agentic workflows
Systems & leadership Project/supplier/team management · requirements & testing · AS9100 QMS · PDM/PLM/MES · regulator engagement · certification campaigns

The engineer behind it.

John Munro started building in kindergarten and never stopped. He narrowly avoided blowing up his parents' kitchen as a child cooking rocket fuel. Over 3 decades of tinkering later, he has a Bachelor of Mechanical & Space Engineering, P.Eng registration, peer-reviewed papers & conference talks, a pilot's license, a US patent, and 15 years professional experience across 3 continents with products that survived test ranges, underground pipelines and fire seasons.

Bluecrest is everything learnt along the journey, available for your hardest problems. Small by design — you work with the engineer, not an account manager.

07 / FAQ

Common questions.

What projects fit best?

Robotics & inspection systems, smart hardware & connected products, test rigs & instrumentation, machine automation, redesigns for manufacture. If it mixes moving parts, sensors & software — it fits.

What if my project needs a deep specialist?

Then I'll say so. For complex, safety-critical items, or large-scope work requiring additional resources, I'll bring in trusted specialists and stay accountable for integration — or hand you a clean scope you can take elsewhere.

How do you charge?

Fixed scope, fixed price for defined work packages. Larger projects break into staged packages so you can review at each gate. No open-ended day rates — unless you prefer that.

Who owns the IP?

You do — all of it: CAD, schematics, source code, documentation. Transferred on final payment.
